Overwhelm in Draining Times

Finding Your Place of Rest!

Hey there, dear reader! A while back, I learned something so profound from my awesome coach, and I think it's the perfect time to share it with you.

This is me inviting you to a place of rest in today’s post. We live in a challenging world where we are constantly bombarded with news and information that we often have no business hearing. Amidst this chaos, there's one key insight I want you to take away: overwhelm is not an emotion.

An overwhelming schedule equates to an overwhelmed soul. It’s not just about the number of activities you're engaged in; it’s about what aligns with your energy and spirit. You have the power to investigate your life, business, schedule, and every area where you need to show up in a personal way, enabling you to create the kind of life you want.

Here’s where wisdom comes into play. Wisdom can crisis-proof your life. In these uncertain times, it’s crucial to apply wisdom so you don’t get drained and overwhelmed. Wisdom helps you separate planning from action. It teaches you that not every idea needs to be executed by you, that the burning idea in your heart might not be for the present moment, and that not every good suggestion requires immediate action. Wisdom acts as a sensor, beeping when you are misaligned.

Failing to take the time to plan inevitably leads to overwhelm. The world is stressful enough, so there’s no need to self-generate additional stress. Focus on what truly matters to you. Creative stress is different from chaotic stress. Understand this: a free calendar does not equate to availability. So, stop overscheduling.

Overwhelm can manifest in various ways: physically, emotionally, socially, within your schedule, or even mentally. However, you can choose to take it one day at a time.

Here are a few practical steps to help you beat that feeling of being overwhelmed:

  • Scheduling:

Order your life. Trim out the excesses and prioritize what truly matters. Focus on deep work that aligns with your energy. Identify the tasks that require your most focused and undivided attention. Allocate specific times in your schedule for deep work, free from distractions. This practice not only boosts productivity but also brings a sense of accomplishment and progress.

I highly recommend the book "Free to Focus" by Michael Hyatt, which offers excellent strategies for optimizing your time and energy.

  • Support System:

The importance of having a support system cannot be overemphasized. The main goal is to ensure the work gets done, and it doesn’t have to be you who does everything. Invest in relationships that nurture and support you. Hire that assistant you’ve been considering. Join networks that fuel your vision. Delegate tasks that others can handle, freeing up your time for what truly matters.

  • Simplify:

Declutter your life. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Enjoy a restful state of soul. Leave those WhatsApp groups that drain your energy. Reduce your volunteer roles to focus on priority tasks without feeling guilty. Simplification leads to clarity and peace. Regularly take time to reflect on your commitments and adjust them as needed. Life is dynamic, and so should be your approach to managing it. Flexibility allows you to respond to changes without feeling overwhelmed.

  • Set Boundaries:

Learn to say no. Respect your limits and communicate them clearly to others. Boundaries are essential in maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life. By setting boundaries, you create space for rest and rejuvenation.

  • Self-Care:

Incorporate activities into your routine that nourish your body, mind, and spirit. This could be anything from a daily walk in nature, practicing mindfulness, engaging in a hobby, or simply taking time to relax. Self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.

By implementing these strategies, you can create a life that feels manageable and fulfilling. Remember, you have the power to shape your schedule and environment in a way that supports your well-being.

Keep in mind that overwhelm is not an emotion but a state that we can control and mitigate. By scheduling wisely, building a robust support system, and simplifying our lives, we can navigate these draining times with grace and ease. Take it one day at a time, and allow yourself the rest and peace you deserve.

Embrace the wisdom to plan thoughtfully, act purposefully, and live restfully.

Stay encouraged, enlightened, and at peace.
