FOMO Why?

Your Guide to Embracing Your Own Path

It's an undeniable human desire to feel included, loved, and valued. If you're not experiencing these emotions, it can be tough to cope. Now, in today's world, where social media has become an integral part of our lives. We often spend hours scrolling through our feeds, but this mindless activity can have adverse effects on our mental health.

Social media can make us feel like we're missing out on something significant while everyone else is moving on to bigger and better things. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the constant stream of content, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

To make things worse, there's a trend in Nigeria called "pepper dem," which involves people intentionally showing off their lives to make others envious. Hey, oftentimes, the idea is to present a facade of a perfect life, which can put immense pressure on people who are struggling to keep up. And when you haven’t dealt with the root of envy it leads to comparison, where you measure your worth based on how much you have achieved or how many material possessions you have. Whatever the case might be, it's a toxic mindset that fosters envy and jealousy, which can be detrimental to our mental health and well-being.

It's no secret that the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is a real thing that can affect us all. It's a feeling of unease that arises when we perceive that we're missing out on something exciting or valuable that others are experiencing.

However, it's important to remember that comparing your journey to someone else's journey is not a fair or productive practice. It’s not fair to you; it’s not fair to those you’ve been called to serve. Social media, in particular, has become a breeding ground for FOMO, as it presents an idealized and curated version of people's lives. What we see on social media is often not the full story, and the reality of someone's life may be very different from what they choose to share online. Therefore, it's crucial to keep in mind that social media is not a real place, and it's not a reflection of our own reality.

It's common to feel like you're being left behind, especially when you see others achieving things that you haven't yet. However, it's important to remember that everyone's path to success is different, and success itself is defined differently by each person.

If you find yourself feeling this way, try taking a step back and asking yourself what success really means to you. Is it achieving a certain level of income? Having a fulfilling career? Starting a family? Traveling the world? Whatever it is, it's important to define success on your own terms rather than comparing yourself to others.

When you focus too much on what others are doing, it can be difficult to show up as your authentic self. You might find yourself trying to fit into a mold that isn't right for you or chasing goals that don't actually align with your values. This can be a disservice to yourself, as it can lead to burnout, frustration, and a lack of fulfillment.

So, take some time to really think about what success means to you and what steps you need to take to achieve it. Remember that your path is unique to you, and that's what makes it special. Don't worry about what others are doing, and instead focus on being the best version of yourself.

Dear reader, you can only be an authentic version of yourself by digging into your design. My coach would say - “ you are not too anything to be anything.” You are not too young to be anything; you’re not too old to be anything, might be scary, but you can start again at any age. Remember, “anytime you wake is your own morning.”

Simple tips to help you kick FOMO to the curb and own your journey like a boss:

  • Enclosed  Eyes: Close your eyes! Have you ever stopped to think about the power of your gaze? Your eyes are one of the gateways to your mind, and what you choose to look at can have a profound impact on your thoughts and emotions. Take a moment to reflect: what are you looking at right now? Is it something that uplifts and inspires you, or something that drags you down? Are you spending too much time scrolling through social media, bombarding your mind with endless streams of information? If so, it might be time to step away and give your mind a rest. Take a break and focus on something that brings you joy, peace, and clarity. Your mind will thank you for it.

  • Busy Business: Mind your business. It's important to stay focused on your own journey and what benefits you in the long run. Comparing yourself to others can be detrimental, as everyone's path is unique, and you shouldn't waste time trying to keep up with others. Instead, put your energy into what serves you and your goals. This will help you stay on track and achieve success in your own way. Remember to always stay true to your own path.

  • Territory Triggers: It's empowering to recognize and understand your triggers for feeling like you're missing out on something. Know your triggers. When you take the time to reflect on these situations, you gain insight into your own emotions and thought patterns. Armed with this knowledge, you can approach similar situations with greater self-awareness and a more positive mindset.

  • Activate Authenticity: Embrace the beauty of your individuality, including your quirks and imperfections. Be proud of your authentic self and let your true personality shine through. You'll be amazed by the unique magic that comes to light when you allow yourself to be genuinely you.

Instead of letting FOMO dictate our lives, we should focus on our own journey, set our own goals, and make progress at our own pace. By doing so, we can avoid the negative effects of FOMO and live a more fulfilling and authentic life. Remember, life's too short to spend it worrying about what everyone else is doing. Focus on your journey, celebrate your victories, and trust that you're exactly where you need to be.
